In Flair's book, there is a good article on Starrcade87. When Jim Crockett felt the urge to move the event from Greensboro/Atlanta to Chicago, he alienated fans in Virginia, Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas. Fans from DC to Miami wanted Starrcade in the Mid-Atlantic or Southeast.
When Vince chose to show Survivor Series, it was a done deal. The Evil Empire had won out over good 'ol fashioned pro wrestling.

I think Starrcade was held in Chicago because Crockett/Dusty wanted to break the regional "stigma" of being a Carolinas promotion. Great way to make an impression on the city by screwing their most popular act (and hometown heroes) out of the tag titles on that show.
Sure the Greensboro folks were upset about Starrcade not being held there in 87, but I think what really alienated those fans was the constant screw-jobs they saw month after month.

Dusty was the king of the screw jobs. I love how the commercial release of Starrcade 85 makes it like Dusty wins the NWA World Title for a third time.

IIRC, he actually did win the title on the show, but was shortly thereafter stripped of it.

I watched Starrcade 87 on closed circuit in Johnson City, TN. It was a fun night. I loved the show. From top to bottom I think it was one of the better Starrcades.

Did Mid-Atlantic start having cards in the Tri-Cities (Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol) beginning in 1987? 1986? 1985?

The first Mid-Atlantic Card that I went to in Johnson City was the Great American Bash tour in '85. This was the first Mid-Atlantic card that I knew of in the area besides shows on the outskirts. I went to a show in Damascus, VA in '77 where Flair wrestled Blackjack. From 77-85 I didn't know of any shows in the area, but we were into Southeastern and then ICW until it folded. There may have been shows before '85 in Johnson City promoted by Crockett, but I didn't know about any.

of those results, are those the Southeastern shows that JCP helped fill up the cards on with MACW talent? i noticed sullivan, bruiser, thornton, and such are mentioned. the 10/6 date, was that brisco defending the NWA Jr title? i know he lost it back to thornton ten days later in knoxville.

I am going to take the other side here. I don't think Crockett taking Starrcade to Chicago was such a bad idea. Chicago was a bigger Metropolitan area with a bigger media market, etc. and Crockett I think wanted to try to make it a bigger deal. If you will recall, Crockett also went back to Chicago in '89 with Chi-Town Rumble.

yeah, but at the same time his foundation crumbled. MACW areas were his foundation. the rest of the US were new walls to erect. you can't build good walls without a healthy strong foundation.
