Can someone help me regarding the NWA title match between Harley Race and Ric Flair where Bob Orton Jr. turned heel and attempted to collect the bounty on Flair.....
1. In what city/venue did this match take place? 2. What was the actual date of the show?
Thanks in advance.

I might be wrong, but I think that it happened on August 31st, 1983 in Shelby, NC.

I don't think that is correct. You may be thinking of the angle where Flair returned with the baseball bat and chased Orton and Slater; that took place in Shelby. But the building where Flair and Race had the match where orton turns doesn't look like Shelby to me at all.

You are correct. I am confusing the two events. I am not sure where and when that Race/Flair match took place...

Not sure on the date, either late August or first week of September. The site, IIRC, was Greenwood, S.C. The match was shown on MACW.

I think that WWE just ran an ECW show in Greenwood a few weeks ago. I did not know that MACW used that venue back in 1984. It was probably late August/early September.

Greenwood was a regular taping spot for JCP during the NEMO days. Thanks for the info BlueDevil.

I could be wrong on this, but I believe it was the old Charlotte Coliseum.

Well, guess we'll have to research more on this, but I'm sure I heard it was Greenwood (read it somewhere). BJ, guess we'll be doing some research on this one.

Baltimore Jack, something of note here. On the WWE DVD, they list the date as Aug. 31, 1983 (a Wednesday night). On another DVD I have with this match, the date listed is Sept. 8, 1983 (a Thursday night).
I tend to believe the first date is more accurate.
I've tried to research both footages for more details, but nothing yet. But I don't believe it's Raleigh. Venue doesn't look right for that one. Still searching ...

Seems like I really got things confused here. I guess it's a sign of growing old.... Anyway, after going back through some old photos I took, I see where I was getting confused. This may have taken place a few weeks before the Orton doublecross. As you can see by the pics below, taken at the old Charlotte Coliseum, Dick Slater interfered in the Flair/Race matchup and left Flair laying. Orton and others came to Flair's aid. Was it shortly after this that Orton turned on Flair, as well?
