Didn't JCP usually run "bigger shows" during special times, way before Starrcade? I mean shows that were not generally broadcasted on CCTV, but where usually more hype. Like a 4th of July, or Thanksgiving show? Did they generally draw well?

some older guys can answer more detailed here, but i can tell you this. greensboro was every thanksgiving night for i think 21 years before STARRCADE '83, if the greensboro newspaper article was accurate. it was always a big show and drew very well from what i have always heard. the tourney for the vacant US title in '75 (wasn't it?) in greensboro has a legendary rep for the matches, the lineup, and the crowd. charlotte did christmas night for i don't know how long. greensboro had the "boogie jam '84" on 3/17/84. this had the famous unmasking of assassin #2 revealing hercules hernandez as well as the 60 min draw between flair-steamboat i keep raving about. the NWA meadowlands card on 5/29/84 in east rutherford,nj was big as the NWA "invaded" NY. joint between JCP/GCW and some other names. SILVERSTAR '85 was in greensboro on 3/16/85. huge crowd with the wahoo-flair strap match under the match where tully blanchard lost the TV belt to dusty. but let's not forget the 3/12/83 greensboro show where slaughter-kernodle lost the NWA world tag titles to steamboat-youngblood. that was the crowd of all crowds. now that show has a rep of legend. but the legend is 1000% true. it made all the local news about how many were turned away at the doors after the tickets were all sold.

I think this may have been my first trip to Greensboro to watch wrestling, but I'm sure I wasn't the only one making the drive to see this card. I remember getting out of the car and people approaching us telling us to go home, there were no more tickets. Luckily, ours were at "will call" and what a night. My memory isn't good enough to remember all the matches (maybe you guys can help me with that,) but I seem to remember Flair vs. Valentine, the incredible tag match, and that's about it. I've always been told that it was this card, and the fans coming from all over that convinced the Crocketts to do CCTV of the first Starrcade.

if you are talking about the dvd that made the rounds of that show last year, the valentine-flair match was not on it. i have no idea why. but it was on the undercard of the 3/12/83 show. it's too bad. it was a really good match between the two.

Most likely they wanted to save time, and skipped on taping the Flair-Vally match. Too bad too.

the Christmas afternoon cards in Charlotte was always a favorite of mine. they were usually tv tapings and it was a helluva atmosphere. the Crockett era was the finest in thnis sport. the regionalization of wrestling was its biggest plus all those years. WWE is all we really have now, and I am by no means a fan of their "style" but... we do tend to romanticize this era and forget how bad some of the undercards were. BUT... give me March '83 in Greensboro over this coming Sunday in Pittsburgh any day of the week, month, year, decade... etc.

Cadillac Cups starting in Mid-70's?
Im seem to recall a handfull of MA TV Title tourns as well.
Can't forget the big shows from Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto Ontario, Canada in conjunction with Tunney.
I also consider "Battle of the Nature Boys" as a pretty damn good card. Greensboro, NC (7.8.79)
Gary Young vs. Tony Russo. Les Thornton vs. Mr. X. Tony Garea vs. Charlie Fulton. Johnny Weaver & Jay Youngblood vs. Gene Anderson & Swede Hanson. Jim Brunzell & Rufus R. Jones vs. John Studd & Ken Patera. Dusty Rhodes vs. Ernie Ladd. NWA U.S. Champ Ric Flair vs. Buddy Rogers. NWA World Champ Harley Race vs. Ricky Steamboat

It's a shame that Flair-Valentine was edited off the DVD.
The tag was excellent, and Piper vs Slater was a good match.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Loosing the Toronto, ON market was the first mistake JCP made.

Going all the way back into the 1960's (I know there's a separate category for these days, but the question originated here), JCP always ran "special" shows at the "Big Dome", the old Charlotte Coliseum.
The holidays were generally Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, July 4th, and Labor Day.
All other shows were at Park Center.
JCP ran 52 Mondays per year, although some of the "specials" would be on Sundays.

bobbyryates wrote: The "Full Nelson Video" version of the 3/12/83 Greensboro show came from one of several tapes made for the boys right after the show, dubbed straight from the Crockett master tape. Not sure if it was the same for all the tapes made for all the guys, but the person who had this source tape made had to have something deleted from the show in order to fit it on one VHS tape. Omitting the 1 hour Flair/Valentine match made the rest of the show fit easily. The Flair/Valentine match was never dubbed to his tape. Keep in mind, it was the boys that were getting copies of this originally, so they were not necessarily as hot for the Flair/Valentine match in the whole scheme of things as fans might be. It was really an after thought on that card anyway, because the match that drew that house 9and the match all the boys were interested in holding onto) was Kernodle/Slaughter vs. Steamboat/Youngblood. Jim Nelson talked about the source tape in his interview with the Gateway and how Arn Anderson was responsible for the "12 second gap". Jim Nelson Interview Part 3: The Final Conflict Even though they went dark, Full Nelson Video still had a few remaining copies of the "Final Conflict" (the 3/12/83 Greensboro show) and the excellent "Road To Greensboro" DVDs at one point. The e-mail address is still on their site.
