I've been travelling a good bit lately, getting ready for this summer's fanfest weekend. This past Monday, I took a few hours in the afternoon to do some sightseeing around the nation's capital. I've driven through that rough stretch of I-95 many times in the last several years, but this was my first sightseeing since I was a kid. I hope those of you travelling to Rockville for fanfest weekend will allow a little extra time, or an extra day, to do a little bit of sightseeing for yourself. Even if you don't drive, downtown DC is just a short trip on the Metro system (the Twinbrook station is directly behind the Doubletree Hotel in Rockville.) Here's three pictures from my afternoon in DC:

Absolutely. There is SOOOOOO much you can do in D.C. If anybody gets a chance while up there, take advantage of it. We went up for a few days in 2001 and it was a great thrill.
Even standing in line for two and half hours to tour the White House.

You can spend an entire weekend alone just taking in the Smithsonian. The Air & Space Musem, and the Museum of American History are must do's.

Chris, the Verizon Center (formerly the MCI Center) is in downtown DC. Best way there from Rockville would be on the Metro. It will take you downtown. Probably a block or two from the Metro Station. Riding on the Metro couldn't cost more than $5, tops.

You can go to www.wmata.com/ and see for yourself how much it costs to metro from rockville to the Verizon Center. Also, unlimited day passes for the metro are $6.

If you take the Red Line to "Gallery Pl/Chinatown" it will literally bring you out directly under the Verizon Center. Go up the escalator and you are at the entrance of the arena. Doesn't get any closer than that!

Thanks for the update, dmtdj. It's been 10 years since I took the Metro to the MCI, oops, Verizon Center.
