I just read on a wrestling site that "Pistol" Pez Whatley passed away in Chattanooga, TN today. Rest in peace.... I will always remember the feud with Jimmy Valiant. Condolences to his family and friends.

I just read this on 1wrestling, I knew he was having health problems earlier last year, but thought he was better. God bless him, I remember him in MACW, but also in ICW.

i just saw this too. this is bad. i never heard if he recovererd from the heart problems that almost killed him awhile back. so i assumed he was recovering.
a personal thought...while at a JCP high school show here in asheboro, i recall one night afterwards, some kid asked "was it fake?" pez looked at him and and said, "did you enjoy it?" the boy said "yeah". pez replied, "then it's real". always loved that moment. he answered it just right, to me.

RIP, Pez. Pez was a great student and a great teacher. I'm glad that I was able to spend a lot of time with Pez and get to know him better. He had the ability to make a lot of opponents look better than they actually were. And what a cut-up. "I'ze gonna whups me a hillbilly tonite!"

Whatley had a massive heart attack about a year ago; the dye used for heart catherizations caused kidney failure, making him go on dialysis. His renal failure was exacerbated by the fact that he had hypertension and diabetes that he was unaware of. He was on the kidney and heart transplant lists, but never got either.
Moral of the story is: None of us are indestructable, and if he had seen a doctor for regular checkups, maybe some of the health problems that caused his death could have been treated and his early demise avoided. I certainly hope that other wrestlers (and fans) learn from his misfortune.
Pez Whatley was great, and he had the talent to have been a solid semi-main to main eventer. He is another loss to the wrestling world - a world that has lost way too many young performers over the past few years.

RIP, Pez. I'm very saddened to have heard of this news. I met him briefly at the WCW Power Plant back in 1993 and he was very cordial during my visit there.

Thats really sad. Pez was a good guy. I remember him hanging out with fans during intermission at some shows in Virginia.
I met him once... I had just gotten my high school class ring, he shook my hand and his grip was so tight I thought the ring would cut into my skin. Pez was really nice to the fans and always looked like he was having fun.
RIP, Pistol Pex Whatley.

That is an awesome story! Another guy who knew what the sport was truly about and another loss to wrestling tradition. He will be missed.
