The Hardliners- Dick Murdoch & Dick Slater were a very tough team that came to WCW in 91 and went right after the Steiners. But they were there just a couple of months. What was the reason behind their fast act?

I don't know if this story had anything to do with it, but it might. At Terry Funk's Q&A, he said that Jim Herd had a bunch of guys standing around and they were trying to find out what was wrong with the business. Dick happened walk by, and Herd called him in and asked his opinion on what was wrong with the business. Dick replied something like, "Why it's you, ya dumb S.O.B." I guess he was gone shortly thereafter.

That Funk story is in his book and it refers to a point in 1989 when Funk was on the booking team. Hadn't Kip Frey replaced Herd by the time of the Hardliners run in mid-'91??

Herd and all the suits screwed the whole business up. Just because they worked for Turner didnt mean they knew anything about wrestling and please lets not leave off Eric Bishoff. what a waste!

Murdoch and Slater could have been a great team. I have heard that Slater is 62 from some folks and 52 from other folks which means he was either born in 1944 or 1954. I am thinking 1954 based upon his run in the 1980s with JCP.

62? I highly doubt it. 52 sounds more accurate.

Slater just turned 54 last Friday, May 19. He's doing well and working at Bam Bam Bigelow's wrestling school in Florida.

I like these two - shame ol' Murdoch isn't with us anymore - he would have been great at one of these FanFests....

I think they were released. I recall reading on Tom Zenk's site (which even though you can argue that he is/was very bitter, he does utilize a lot of quotes and excerpts taken from the Wrestling Observer circa early 90s when he was supposedly being buried) that they were looking to red tag some of Dusty's buddies and Slater was one of those mentioned by name.
And as mentioned, Jim Herd was still in-charge at the time the Hardliners came and went. He didn't resign until January 1992, at which point he was replaced by Kip Frey.
As for Bischoff, like him or hate him, he did more for WCW then Herd, Frey, Watts, or anybody who came before him. The Turner owned WCW never turned a profit in it's history until he took charge, although it did take a couple of years. In the same breath though, he was also in-charge when they began to go downhill so he's looked at as the Anti-Christ that killed them.

I liked WCW back in the 1980s when Ole Anderson was in charge (1982)
