Today it’s hard to tell the “good guys” from the “bad guys”. In the old days you could just watch to see which dressing room they came out of. I thought we could give out some old school rules the new wrestlers could follow again.
1. Good guys shake hands with the fans as they run to the ring; bad guys walk slowly and seldom acknowledge the fans at all. 2. Bad guys don’t dance or jump or play to the crowd before the match 3. Good guys never complain about the officiating such as slow counts or missed infractions; bad guys complain constantly even about phantom hair pulling. 4. Good guys seldom punch, but when they do, their punches are more devastating than the Bad guy’s. 5. A Bad guy will put his foot on the rope to stop a pin attempt even if he can kick out. A Good guy should always kick out if possible. 6. A good guy should always give a clean break out of the turnbuckle, no matter how many times he gets sucker punched by the Bad Guy. 7. If a guy has a manager or valet he will more than likely be a Bad Guy. 8. If a guy wears a mask he will more than likely be a Bad Guy. 9. If a guy struts he will more than likely be a Bad Guy. 10. A good buy does an arm drag; however, a bad guy can do a hip toss
Feel free to add.

Bad guys (or their managers) always give good descriptive interviews and good guys usually give fairly bland interviews.

on the other hand:......
1. if the good guy does complain about a slow count or some other referee action, he shrugs it off and gets back to the match. 2. if the good guy does cheat, it's always AFTER he gets cheated on like crazy. EXAMPLE: steamboat-youngblood 'tagging' behind the ref's back. one would clap his own hands and the other came in. the ref asked them and the crowd if they tagged and everyone said yes. and the ref actually took their word for it. 3. bad guys don't make it a habit of wiggling his butt and dancing on the floor as he has been knocked down. 4. bad guys don't make the 'superman' come back. 5. good guys NOR bad guys DO NOT have catch phrases for the crowds to chant during promos. 6. if the good guys is wearring a mask, he usually just turned face and will either be turning bad again, or be leaving the territory soon.

Good guys smile and are always polite and cheerful. Bad guys always (and I mean always) cheat. If a bad guy wins anything more important than a jobber match, he must cheat to win. Good guys are always gracious in interviews, bad guys always act like the announcer is wasting his time. Also bad guys should threaten the announcer from time to time.

Do you all really think that list would apply to today's crowds? I'm talking about the WWE and TNA crowds? I don't think so....... I agree it is getting harder to tell "faces" from "heels"

Kayfabe can certainly work - it's all about keeping a framework of logic to your product and adhering to it (e.g if certain moves are deadly, then they are deadly for everyone - no one can take 3 of them through a table - that way, after 5 years or whatever, someone can kick out one time and they'll get over like Superman). But I don't necessarily agree with some of the rules posted above: different approaches should be taken for each wrestler - e.g. who do they want to push? In what way do you want that guy to be perceived? For example: say you are getting Brock Lesnar over as heel: few of those rules apply. He's not gonna be scared of anyone, and he's going to do whatever he damn well pleases, and he doesn't need to cheat....
I always took kayfabe to mean protect the realism. A lot of the traditional 'heel vs face' carny exploits aren't very realistic, and - at the top of the card at least, with guys who are being presented as top athletes, these rules should only apply to interviews and angles, and be subtle if evident at all in the actual pay-off match. A good example would be Arn Anderson back in the classic Horseman days. He was always dominant in the ring, and never backed down, despite the fact the he played the heel who would back down when need be in angles etc....
And punches should be limited to those who can do them well. I've rarely been able to 'suspend disbelief' through wrestlers punching each other. People take too many punches and few of them look good. In a real fight, an unprotected punch hitting will knock a tooth out or bust a lip. No one can take 30 of them and no sell them all - people have seen that so many times that the 'spell' is broken and no one buys the punches with the foot stomping on the floor....

Good guys will always be a bit too niave, like shaking hands or breaking clean, no matter how many times the bad guys sucker punch them for it.
Bad guys will be a bit to cockey, like pointing to their heads or yelling at the crowd when the good guy is standing behind him.

Hey everyone! Been a long time but I'm glad to be back, and I thought I'd throw in my two cents worth on this among points already noted.....
-For the most part, heels are out for themseleves, while the babyface is out for the people and his friends. -A heel is justified in anything he does. A babyface is justified by what's right.
