Anyone have any thoughts on "The Total Package"? I always felt he had the most potential in the world, great physique, but seemed to be missing something.

i loved him in florida. HE HAD IT!!! then, i loved him in JCP. a great specimen. thought he was really good on the mic then. but i think he was turned face way too quick. just when folks were getting used to him, he is turned. it's like all his learning stopped then too.

I really liked him too. He was just so much more of a physical specimen compared to the rather out-of-shape stars of the era. It made him seem almost unbeatable. Granted, his three-move repetoire did not take long to get exposed and given that now, at over 20 years later, it hasn't expanded . . . well, when your moveset is that limited, you need a touch more personality than Lex truly had.

I agree with all of the above. Unfortunately a big part of his physique was sterroids evidently.

I enjoyed Lugers work in Florida and felt they were doing what they could down there to bring him along. I feel the mistake with Luger though was made by having him enter as a heel. Luger was way to green to be placed in that high of a position as a heel. Luger would of been better off at that point in time being built the same way Sting was from Jan 1988 - Mar 1988. Luger is in no position to dictate match policy in 1987, to green. I do feel Luger was slowly "getting it" 87, 88, and 89. Then he went on a downward spiral and phoned it in to much for my tastes.

Honestly I never really cared for Luger that much. He was pretty good, but he just didn't impress me too much.

I was never a fan. He was a good worker in 1989 with a lot of good matches. That was his best year in the ring. Otherwise, he needed Flair.

Never liked Luger from the beginning, including Florida. This is all only one person’s opinion, but he had the look and that was it. And the look kept getting him push after push after push. Crockett wanted his own Hulk Hogan and thought Luger would be it. He was terrible on the mic and worse in the ring. Flair carried him to some good matches in 1988, but that was all Flair. I'll never forget one of his early interviews, maybe his first on TBS when he was flailing around like a fish out of water, turning nearly purple, gasping for air. I'm exaggerating a little, but he completely lost his thoughts, and was literally (not exaggerating here) grasping at JJ Dillon’s coat and sleeve begging for help to bail him out. It was awful. That one interview killed him for me. It established that he did not deserve his spot, at least not yet. He killed the Horsemen for me in 1987, ruined the whole aura of the group for a year there. How could you replace the attitude of Ole Anderson with Luger? Flair and JJ in particular did everything they could to get him over, and business was generally good for most of 1987. I thought it was the right move to turn him babyface, where less is generally expected. And then Barry Windham made the Horsemen whole again, turning on Luger, and all was right with the world again. (Maybe I'm too grumpy about this? )

I've never understood why people are always so down on Luger. I always liked the guy. In fact I'm going to tell him Saturday what you guys have been saying about him and then you'll be sorry. Seriously though, Luger has been to the top in every promotion he's been in. He can be hated and he can be loved. What more do you want from the guy?

I wasn't much of a fan. Yeah, he had the look, but yikes, he couldn't talk to save his life, and his abilities were very limited. I always thought he got too much push without much to back it.

Thumbs down to Luger.
Yeah, he looked good (so did Hogan).
But he couldn't work. A clothesline and the torture rack is not enough to work a match.
Of course, his matches with Flair were good, but we all know why.
When VKM gave him the monster push against Yokozuna with the "Lex Express", and DIDN'T give him the belt at Wrestlemania...well, like VKM or not, he knew Luger couldn't carry the WWF with the belt.
Others should have realized the same thing.

in my own humble opinion, I have to say that I feel Lex was far too overated ! His mic skills were horrible ! Granted he had one of the greatest bodys in wrestling , but his personality never was able to be showcased in front of the camera. I have met him in person and he seems like a decent guy and seems fun to be around , shame he was never able to convey the charisma. This was one person with tons of potential, but never bothered to develop more than a couple basic moves or hone his under-developed mic skills. what a shame ! There were far better workers that deserved the pushes that he recieved .
