What are everyone's thoughts on this? I have heard some people say before that for a while they thought Dusty Rhodes was the poor man's Hulk Hogan. The American Dream was the dude who whooped butt in the NWA. Now I realize Dusty never had probably half the following that the Hulkster did, but on a smaller level do you guys think that with his personality and position he held in the NWA that he was a poor man's Hulk Hogan? Or do you guys think they are far too different to compare?

Whatever anyone says about Dusty Rhodes, Tommy Rich, Jimmy Valiant, etc... these guys could wrestle. Now they where not Rickey Steamboat or Ric Flair but they could work night after night. Hogan was not a wrestler at all. I like old school and never liked his act.

I was never a Dusty fan - but for his size he could wrestle a long match if needed - If I had to pick one to watch it would be Hogan - Dusty just aggravated me with his working class hero stuff

DUSTY was here frist, and he was a lot better wrestler and worker, imo,no disrepect meant to HOGAN, but DUSTY WAS GOOD AT WHAT HE DONE.

If you want to compare them as faces, I'd say Dusty portrayed someone that people could identify with, "the every man." Hogan on the other hand was portraying somebody larger-than-life, and then attempted to include the fans in it by making them part of Hulkamania. I always felt Dusty's fans were more passionate because he was an extension of them. Hogan's fans were almost recruited and seemed more like bandwagon jumpers. It was "cool" to pull for Hogan because he was so hot worldwide. It's easy to say Dusty was the poor version, but that's simply based on exposure. Hogan was made for TV, Dusty was made for people.

Rhodes and Hogan do have one thing in common.....
They're my two least favorite wrestlers of all time.

Hogan was the poor-man Rhodes imo. Rhodes was believable regular old joe. Hogan was superman in yellow tights. I found Rhodes more believable and with the sam exposure, could me more popular than Hogan.

Dave Moore got it right with the above committ. Hogan couldnt even come up with a name for himself. I wrestled him in Georgia when he wrestled as Sterling Golden and his finish was the bear hug called the "Golden Squeeze". I've never seen anyone go so far on such little talent. While Hogan was saying take your vitamins he was shootin up steroids!!!

DUSTY AND FLAIR, 2 NAMES THAT REALLY PUT JCP ON THE MAP. BOTH HAVE HUGE EGOS AND I LIKED 'EM BOTH. HULK HOGAN DID NOTHING FOR ME, LIKE SOMEONE ELSE SAID HE WAS A WALKING CARTOON. A BODYBUILDER WITH A PUSH..LIKE ULTIMATE WARRIOR. WE SHOULD ALL HOPE AND PRAY NEVER TO SEE HULK IN A RING AGAIN. LET HIM MAKE MOVIES

I see where you're going comparing the two. They do have similiar types of angles, though they certainly aren't anything alike. I hate Hogan with every ounce of my being though. Always have... always will. The fact that Hogan represents so much to do with wrestling, but to truly have so little in the way of abilities makes me want to vomit. I don't have a lot of love for Dusty (though I will admit to liking him somewhat in the day depending on who he was up against), but I hate Hogan.

I think two very different animals. I agree with a lot on here, but there were moments where Hogan could wrestle in a style that might've given him longevity in the old JCP. Those moments, however, were few and far between and mostly not in the US... and seldom after 1984.
As stated before, Dusty was the common man's hero, Hogan was a superhero there I think is the big difference between the two.
