During my first full year as a fan (1962),Rip Hawk and Swede
Hanson had not yet formed a permanent team.At the time Rip
was tag teaming with Rock Hunter. Rip and Swede teamed up
here in the Crockett territory in the spring of 1963.
From that time on until December 1973 they would win tag titles
and feud with every face and heel tag team that came through
the area during that ten year period. From the spring of 1971
until Sept.1972,Playboy Gary Hart was their manager. When Gary
Hart left Homer O'Dell was their manager until December 1973.
During the summer of 1973 the team of Hawk and Hanson
suffered a couple of setbacks.First it was announced on tv that
Swede was out with an injury.I can't remember it being told on
any of the three JCP tv shows at the time that Swede had a
heart attack.
The next thing that happened was the NWA banned the
piledriver (for the time being anyway). Rip was doing a lot of
singles matches at the time against Thunderbolt Patterson and
Jerry Brisco.During Swede's absence,Bobby Shane teamed with
Rip.
Swede Hanson returned to the team in early November 1973.
The last time I would ever see them wrestle on a house show
for JCP was Thanksgiving night 1973 when they beat Eddie and
Mike Graham. Shortly thereafter it was announced on tv that Rip
was suspended for repeated use of the banned piledriver.
After Rip left the area to wrestle in Florida,Swede Hanson teamed
up with Super Destroyer. Later during the first part of 1974,
Swede and the Destroyer lost a tag match on tv.Destroyer
slapped Swede because Swede got pinned. This led to a fallout.
By the time Rip Hawk returned to Mid-Atlantic in the spring of
1974,Swede was being cheered in his feud with Super Destroyer.
Rip would tag with Johnny Valentine and Ivan Koloff before Ric
Flair came in to JCP and teamed with "Uncle Rip".
Rip and Swede would wrestle each other many times in singles
and tags for the remainder of 1974.Sadly Rip Hawk left Jim
Crockett Promotions in Dec.1974 and never wrestled for them
again.
