CH....................do you suppose the John Smith in the prelim match is the John Smith from the John and Al Smith (russians) tag team from the 50s and 60s?

Yes it was Barry. I believe Al Smith had already quit wrestling by the time I discovered wrestling. John Smith continued to wrestle for Jim Crockett until around 1964 if I remember right.

Did anyone get the feeling watching these two wrestle that Valentine wanted to really hurt/punish Weaver? Didn't Weaver leave the territory shortly after Valentine arrived?

John Wolfman Smith relocated to Florida where he ran a bar. He continued to wrestle occasionally for Eddie Graham in Florida until 1977 or so.

Al Smith became Jolly Cholly in the WWWF. Last listing I have for him is from the summer of 1964.

Thanks for the info on the Smith Brothers, clawmaster.
Weaverlock, when Johnny Valentine came in to JCP in the fall of 1973,he and Johnny Weaver started an immediate program in Charlotte.Film highlights were shown on tv from two of those matches.Valentine pinned Johnny Weaver on Thanksgiving night. Johnny Weaver pinned Johnny Valentine on Christmas night for the win. Other than what I saw on the tv shows was the one match they wrestled in Winston-Salem during the spring of 1974. I don't believe they faced each other in Greensboro during the two years before the plane crash,1973-75.
Johnny Weaver left for Florida in Jan.1975.He returned to JCP in the fall of 1975.

Valentine was paired against Weaver as soon as he arrived (if I remember correctly), being Johnny was top dog in JCP at the time. They had a series of matches in Charlotte (I saw several of them), with Weaver failing to win Valentine's title.
Bearcat Wright had entered the territory "chasing" Valentine, who wanted no part of Bearcat.
On WBTV Wrestling, Weaver asked Valentine for one more Charlotte match. Valentine said he had nothing left to prove wrestling Weaver anymore and refused. Finally, he agreed to sign a contract for one more match with Weaver. Johnny W. handed the contract to Johnny V., who signed it on the show, not realizing Weaver had tricked him into signing to wrestle Bearcat Wright.
Valentine and Wright then began their program.

Based on some info I've found on the net it looks like shortly after Weaver's program with Valentine he went to FL. I remember seeing a picture of him wearing a title belt and helping Slater from the ring. I wonder who Scott got in the talent swap, if one occurred. Can anyone confirm this?

Yes.Johnny Weaver and Dick Slater held the Florida Tag Team belts. As far as a talent swap,I have never heard anything concerning that.
I was glad that Championship Wrestling from Florida aired on several North Carolina stations so at least we got to see Johnny Weaver's tv appearances while he was there.
