Both bluedevil71 and RowdyRoddy have raised some good questions. I have no knowledge of what went on behind the scenes. All I can tell you is what I saw on tv,the arenas or magazines. When David Crockett was wrestling as David Finley I remember seeing photos of Jimmy Crockett in a magazine working as a referee in a territory other than Mid-Atlantic.
After Big Jim passed away in April 1973, both Jim Jr. and David did a very emotional interview in the ring with Joe Murnick.I saw this on the syndicated version of the WRAL show hosted by Bob Caudle, broadcast on WSLS 10 Roanoke,VA. I am just assuming that this is when they took control of the company. That may be incorrect but it is what I have always believed.

Gosh - how much I would pay for a copy of that TV show, if it even existed....

I was twenty years old when that show aired. At that time I had been a fan of JCP wrestling for almost twelve years. As I sat there watching I felt like I had lost a member of my family.

Big Jim was a hero in Charlotte. He was the promoter in the Carolinas from the 1930s up until his death in the early 1970s. How old was he when he died? 65? 70?

I remember a match on WBTV-Charlotte in which David Finley and a partner I can't recall were wrestling one of the top heel teams at the time---THE ROYAL KANGAROOS (Lord Jonathan Boyd and Norman Frederick Charles III).
Boyd put a submission armlock on David, who submitted. Boyd refused to break the hold, yelling, "That's for the old man!"
Finally, Big Jim left the commentator's desk he was sharing with Big Bill Ward, and went to ringside, banged his hand on the mat, and yelled, "BREAK THE HOLD! BREAK THE HOLD!".
Boyd finally released it, and Big Jim helped David's partner get him out of the studio.
Seems like yesterday.
Concerning a question asked...Big Jim never gave up control of JCP. The kids took over after his death.

Ok. I was not sure how he passed away in 1973 at the age of 64. What was the cause of death? Was it sudden? He started promoting in 1935 in Charlotte. Like Frank Tunney, Sam Mushnick, and others, he put in a good four decades in the business.

In one of the newspaper articles I have read it was reported that Big Jim had not been feeling well and his family took him to the hospital because he was having difficulty breathing. While that article did not clearly state the cause of death,I assumed it was heart failure.

I saw the same match except it was at the Gastonia N.C. Armory............Jonathan Boyd was putting a beating on David and Mr Crockett came to the ring and stoped it...................I don't think anyone knew that he was Mr Crocketts son...................Finley is the maiden name of Davids mom.

I cannot imagine Vince McMahon Jr tapping out to Killer Kowalski's nerve hold in the 1970s.

Vince wasn't as big or strong back then, before he got all "roided" up.

It is sickening to see what Vince has done to this business over the past 20 years. He, the promoter, is the #1 man in WWE. What an ego. He will probably die in the next decade due to drug (steroid) abuse. I suppose his son and daughter will take over.

How long did Dave Crockett serve as a wrestler/announcer/promoter for Mid-Atlantic? 1971 - 1988?
