Longtime JCP star Sam Steamboat (Sam Mokuahi Jr.) passed away on Tuesday, May 2nd. Apparently, he was suffering from Alzheimer's Disease and had a stroke several months back. He would have turned 72 today.
RIP, Sam.
I had the pleasure of seeing him wrestle in JCP during the late 60's. One of my first ever memories of watching pro wrestling on TV was a bout when Sam Steamboat teamed with Mr. Wrestling to take on the evil duo of Rip Hawk & Swede Hanson.
Hawk & Hanson beat both men to a bloody pulp, it was very gruesome and daring for a TV match at that time...around 1968 IIRC. I always enjoyed seeing Steamboat wrestle and as stated earlier, it is a shame that he is seemingly best known to many of today's fans as Ricky Steamboat's "father".
