Jim Starr (left) and Billy Garrett had a good run here in 1971 as the Masked Marvels. They had wrestled in other areas as the Interns and Masked Medics. The Marvels lost their masks to Les Thatcher and Sandy Scott on Aug.5,1971 in the old Winston-Salem Coliseum. The outfits they wore were green.

I always wondered abouth them from when I was around 10 years old. I also remember around that time Argentine Apollo, Matty Suzuki, Sandy Scott, the Missouri Mauler and Brute Bernard with general Homer O'Dell. If the Marvels were in 1971 any idea when the others above workedon top? I am trying to figure out what year i started watching. Such a shame so little exists from that era I'd love to see Homer O'Dell on video again. My grandma used to get so mad when he was on tv.

Stylin61, The Missouri Mauler and Brute Bernard were managed by Homer O'Dell in 71-72.They won the Atlantic Coast Tag Team belts from George Becker and Johnny Weaver on Oct.12,1971 in Raleigh,NC.Prior to that Becker,Weaver and Argentina Apollo had been working 6 man tags against Mauler,Brute and Art Nelson in Greensboro.
Sandy Scott was teaming with Jerry Brisco in 1971.Matti Suzuki was here too. When Matti first came in he wrestled as a face.He later turned heel and teamed up with Rock Hunter.

I was lucky to grow up in central North Carolina and could watch wrestling from Charlotte, High Point, and Raleigh on TV. I have a vague recollection of Matti Suzuki turning on his partner Oni Wiki Wiki on channel 5. It seems like he threw salt in his eyes. That seemed to be the weapon of choice for Japanese villains in that day. I recall Mr. Fuji also using salt. A lot of my memories of channel 5 at that time involved Rock Hunter and also Chris Markoff. Was that the same time? Did Elliot Murnick announce or just ring announce? Was Wally Dusek like 110 years old and ring announcing? Butcher

Chris Markoff was in the area during 1970 to early 1971 so yeah most of the guys mentioned were in the area at the same time at some point with some of them staying longer than others.
When I was first able to receive WRAL in 1973,Elliot Murnick was the host of that show.Later after the local shows ended, he did do some of the ring announcing for the shows.

I saw one of the Marvels in a singles match in Rocky Mount, NC just after they had lost their masks. He kept trying to put it on before the match but both his opponent (I can't remember who) and the crowd kept complaining to the ref that he needed to take it off. I was only 9 at the time.

I saw one of them in Charlotte after their unmasking in a match against a young Jim (J.J.) Dillon.
He told the ref that he was going to wear the mask during the match to prevent his pretty face from being "messed up".
He loaded the mask, hit Dillon with the dreaded "foreign object", won the match, took off the mask, and left the ring.
