a question coes to me as i watched the new WBTV footage from 1961 on the mid-atlantic gateway. buddy rogers applies the figure four on joe garcia and refuses to let go after the bell. he holds it on, but then rolls over before he releases it. my question is the roll over. it was back in '82, i think, that jack brisco showed us the reversal of the figure four on World Wide Wrestling. the reversal was rolling over. the reversal showed it reversed the pain onto the person that applied the figure four. well, with rogers, the roll over did not do this, he just rolled over and then released the hold. anybody figure this out or was the 'reversal' brisco showed us just a new tactic for the '80's to where we would know no better?

The legend I've always heard was that it was Don Muraco who first figured out how to reverse the figure four, on Jack Brisco in Florida in the 1970s. I actually think when Buddy rolls the figure four over in that clip, he does it in a way to to apply more pressure and to prevent the referee from forcing him to break it. See, if the person that is applying the hold rolls it over, it doesn't hurt, it doesn't reverse the hold. If the person in the hold rolls it over, it reverses the hold, and can be very painful to the person applYing the hold. That was outlined in Roger's 1978 book "Dark Secrets of The Figure Four Grapevine" (McGraw Hill). The video clip in question can be seen on the WBTV page of the new " Studio Wrestling" feature on the Mid-Atlantic Gateway. A very cool video clip!

The WBTV video footage is an incredible discovery. Lets hope that more surfaces in the future. This is a very important piece of history concerning Jim Crockett Promotions and their studio wrestling shows.
It is very possible that one of our fellow board members Matt Burns may have been in the studio audience that night.I hope he gets to see the video soon to confirm this.

What I always noticed about the figure-four was that Buddy Rogers really locked the hold on his opponent (which, legit, hurt like "&%*#"), whereas later users (Brisco and Flair included) seldom actually locked the hold, but merely put one leg over the other (it still hurts, but not as bad).

I like the way Rogers would also really work the foot and ankle of the leg, too, as you clearly see in the video clip. Joe Garcia sells it beautifully, too.

I'ts very possable that my Dad brother and I were there...........................we were there for the first studio match in January 1958.......................in the picture of Big Bill Ward on the gateway.......................we would try and sit on the bleachers just to Big Bill's left from where he did his ring side interviews...............it didn't always work out that way tho..................everybody had to stand in line outside the door until time to go in and they seated everybody as they came in starting on the front row and working to the top.....................I did a little math and counting of seats and knew pretty close where to get in line to get our favorite seats...............I've heard the the ch 36 studio was small.....................but the ch 3 studios was pretty small too..................its been around 48 years and and a lot has slipped by.......................I can recall the floor plan with one section of bleachers on one side of the ring aand a row of about 4 folding chairs on another side.................Big Bill and Mr Crocketts desk in a corner and three huge camaras....................I think this was the studio where the news and other live brodcast came from.....................anybody remember "Country Style Round-up" a live music show with Bill Hefner (later congressman Bill Hefner)................we went to that show a lot in the same studio..............until next time...............Be Good Sports Where Ever You Go (Big Bill Ward)

Matt---you are correct about Channel 3 Wrestling being taped in the same studio as the News/Weather/Sports.
I do remember the Bill Hefner country music show (with Ray and Lois Atkins--after the Atkins had left Arthur Smith).
Betty Feezor's and Pat Lee's weekday afternoon shows were also done in that studio, I believe.
