PENNY BANNER IN THE HALL OF FAME!
by Penny Banner & Shiai Mata
On May 21 the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame brought together a star-studded gathering of legendary talent for its 2005 Induction Ceremony.
Among those inducted into the Hall this year were the Jack Brisco, Dick the Bruiser, the Crusher, Dory Funk, Jr. and the PGWA's very own Commissioner, Penny Banner!
Penny traveled to the ceremony in Amsterdam, New York, and she now shares her thoughts as well as some personal photographs from this once-in-a-lifetime gathering!
"This was my first trip to the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame, and I want to say, I plan on going back again, hopefully every year! We, the wrestlers, were treated like royalty. It was a wonderful experience.
Looking at the museum and seeing my boots and jacket on display brought a tear to my eyes. Just knowing that in the years to follow, they will always be there gave me chills. I was only the fourth girl inducted, and I'm proud to know that there are many more very deserving women who will follow me in the future. And, of course, many deserving men as well.
In the museum there in Amsterdam, there are rare programs from the 1930's with photos. It's a feeling truly hard to explain, knowing that these pieces of history have been saved from oblivion for the enjoyment of fans forever.
While we were there for the ceremony, the local newspaper had write-ups on the front page! What a wonderful town Amsterdam is. We flew into Albany, and then were shuttled over to our hotel. Tony Vellano and Mike Capano, the HoF's President and Vice-President, were absolutely wonderful to all of us. What a great job they did to accommodate everyone, wrestlers and fans alike. The banquet was sold out, and the hotel was booked solid for the ceremony!
I was so proud to introduce my daughter to everyone. She had a wonderful time chatting with the Destroyer's beautiful daughter, Kris, as well as with Jan Brisco.
I do hope that many of you can come to next year's event... I will be sure to let everyone know the details when they are announced!"
