I saw Brute Bernard wrestle in Bluefield WV in 1980. He moved slow but could work the crowd. Pre 1974 was before my time. Bet Brute was one tough guy in his prime. He wore the same boots as Ole and Gene. They had to have worked atleast one 6 man tag with Brute over all those years.

Brute Bernard worked a few tag matches with Gene Anderson in the 70's for sure.

Baltimore Jack: I guess Flair held the Eastern States belt, too? I remember seeing pics of he and Wahoo wearing this belt. The Eastern belt was retired and the title name was changed to the Mid-Atlantic title on Sept. 6, 1973 and reigning Eastern champ Jerry Brisco was awarded a new Mid-Atlantic belt and was announced as the first Mid-Atlantic champion. During Johnny Valentine's reign as Mid-Atlantic champion, the belt disappeared and they began using the old Eastern belt again for the Mid-Atlantic title. This was worn by John Valentine, Wahoo, and Flair recognized as the Mid-Atlantic Championship. In early 1977, the new Mid-Atlantic belt was introduced. This is the belt most associated with the title, used from 1977 through 1985. Photos of all of the Mid-Atlantic champs wearing the various versions of the belt can be found on the Mid-Atlantic Gateway here: www.midatlanticwrestling.net/Almanac/mid_a_history/mid-a_photos_1.htmA complete history of the origin of Mid-Atlantic championship, and more detailed info on the belts can be found on the Gateway at: www.midatlanticwrestling.net/Almanac/mid_a_history/mid-a_title_origin.htm

Great tag teams pre-1974:
The Bolos (I am biased) The Infernos Becker / Weaver Hawk / Hansen Bernard / Murphy Bogni / Lubich Gene & Ole Missouri Mauler / Great Malenko Scott Brothers
My list is "heel" heavy, but they filled the chairs.

Hey Dave. Good to see another Art Nelson fan especially if you like him with Brute Bernard: Thanks In the early 70s I was a huge Art Nelson fan. For some reason I forgot to mention the team of Nelson and Gene Anderson in my list. I saw all of these guys just week after week live at our local auditorium, some of the most brutal two out of three falls matches imaginable, many that went the 60 minute time limit. Fans of today's wrestling ("Sports Entertainment") really cant get an idea of what wrestling was like back then. Like so many people now, I consider Ric Flair to be my all time favorite wrestler, but long before Flair ever set foot in the Carolinas, Art Nelson was my genuine hero.

I always thought that the combo of Weaver/Nelson Royal or Weaver/Mr. Wrestling Tim Woods would have been nice to see on TV.
I just don't remember seeing much of these combos on TV.
Any thoughts on why?

Between 1962 and 1965 George Becker and Johnny Weaver teamed up some but for the most part they tagged up with other partners. That changed in 1965 when they formed a regular team that lasted until George Becker left in 1971.Once in while they would team with other wrestlers during this period especially when Johnny was wrestling in a singles title match.I saw Mr. Wrestling team with both Becker and Weaver during this era but it was rare and I am pretty sure it never happened on tv.

I would have to say Hawk & Hanson. To me they were the best heels team in the area.
