I was watching the WWE Dusty Rhodes DVD today during my lunch hour. In one interview, he says that he plans to beat Ric Flair for the NWA World Title at Starrcade '85 as a tribute to "that great man upstairs that died 10 or 12 years ago." Who is he referring to here?

John Wayne died on June 11th, 1979
Jim Crockett Sr died in 1973 (not sure of day and month)
Not sure when Virgil Runnels father passed away

Knowing Dusty, he's probably talking about himself, like always.

I think he might actually be referring to Jim Crockett Sr. I love Dusty's promos. He talks about Starrcade '85: The Gathering and keeps on saying over and over "We need to gather together. It's going to be a gathering of sorts."

The years certainly add up to it being Jim Crockett Sr., and they were celebrating the 50th anniversary of Crockett Promotions in 1985, but it just doesn't add up given Dusty's tendencies to focus everything on himself and any allegorical or metaphorical references were usually intended to focus on him and his legend and they way he perceived himself or wanted you to perceive him(ala John Wayne, Frank & Jessie James, the Rooster Cogburn True Grit character which was Wayne again, the Midnight Rider, Willie Nelson, etc.) In Florida, he did lots of promos talking about his Dad and that on the day his Dad died, his son was born. Does 1973 add up as the year Dustin might have been born? I’m guessing it was his Dad. If he was talking about Crockett, then I compliment him for thinking of someone else for a change. But if he was talking about Crockett, it had to be in some context that was intended to reflect favorably on him saying it to begin with. Cynical, aren't I?

This may be too big a pain to find again, but can you post which track that was on the DVD?

The promo is on Disk #3. It is one of the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling or NWA World Championship Wrestling promos from 1985.

This is the exact quote from the October 29th, 1985 promo...
"I came back for you and for that man up there that die 10, 12 years ago and never got the opportunity to see a real world's champion. This time when I take it, Daddy, I am going to take it for you. I am proud of you and thank God I have you. Love you!"

No surpise in that 3 line promo, Fat Virgil mentions the word "I" no less than 5 times...no way he was thinking of anyone but himself and dear old daddy on that one.
