I'm in the process of restructuring the Classic Venues section of the Mid-Atlantic Gateway, and have added well over a dozen or so new photos in the last week of some of the great places wrestling was held during the Crockett era. I'm anxious to add more. Take a look at what we have and if you have photos or can find some surfing the net of buildings we don't yet feature, please forward them to us.
The only requirement is that shows were held there on the average of at least once a month during the time Crockett ran there. Some exceptions can be made. For example, there were long stretches where Crockett did not run Winston-Salem (running regularly in nearby High Point and Greensboro). but other periods where they ran there frequently.
Township Auditorium, Columbia SC
Also, there were several ballparks and stadiums where Crockett regularly ran shows in the summer months each year. One of the best examples was American Legion Stadium in Florence SC. There were others, in places like Wilmington NC and Roanoke VA. I'd like to add a section on these as well.
We probably won't be listing the high schools and armories in smaller spot towns, even if wrestling ran there somewhat regularly, although we might do that later. There are a few exceptions. For example, I want to include a photo of the Lynchburg Armory if I can locate one, where major cards were held for many years.
Also, for now, I want to stick to the original core Mid-Atlantic states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
So if you can help us out, let us know. And I'd love for folks to post their memories about some of these buildings that maybe you grew up going to see wrestling in. Best atmosphere, best food, best crowds, anything that might share what it was like to see wrestling there.
