I know both Patera and Angle have very similar backstories (being in the Olympics and always wearing amateur wrestling attire to the ring). But for those who watched Patera in the 1970s and 1980s, and when Angle came onto the scene years later, does the thought of Patera being "the Kurt Angle of his time" first pop up in your mind?

Patera was one of the greatest athletes ever in wrestling and a great heel, so I don't mean for anything I say to diminish him, but to me he didn't stand out above the rest in his time the way Angle does today. To me, Kurt Angle is just one of those guys that no one quite compares to. Patera didn't have that same aura then. (My opinion only - great question, though.)

I'm not knocking Ken Patera either, he really came on strong in the late seventies as he dropped weight and gained speed. Patera just isn't in the same class as Angle as a wrestler and few are. But Kurt Angle in my opinion has gone from one of the most talented amateur wrestlers to one of the top professional wrestler quicker and easier than anyone ever has. Angle is the total package, he wrestles, talks and can rise to meet any challenge that has been put in front of him. It's too bad that his injuries have held him back and will limit the length of his career.

I agree with Baltimore Jack. Aside from both wrestlers being in the Olympics, Angle is by far the better wrestler of the two. This is not a knock on Patera but just my opinion. The "TOTAL PACKAGE" name was WASTED on the pathetic LUGER!

Patera was a great heel in the 1970s and 1980s in MACW and AWA. I think he did not have the mik skills of a Kurt Angle, but he was a good in ring performer. Angle has the total package.

Ken Patera was a magnificant heel in the late 1970's and early 1980's.
He really seemed to come together for a short amount of time from about 1978 - 82. JCP, WWF, Georgia, and St. Louis.
His mic work in the "Strength" angle with Tony Atlas via Mid Atlantic television is golden.

I never got that much enjoyment of Patera's run in JCP. I remember him more for his "feats of strength" than for his matches. He was strong of course and had the pedigree that gained him all sorts of legitimate respect.....but he was not all that memorable overall. My knowledge of his WWWF and AWA days add somewhat but admittedly my M-A prejudice is showing. Kinda like Pedro Morales....I just never got what all the hype was about either of them. I guess that is harsh and I do not mean to disrespect either man's career or their fans. It is just my opinion but Kurt Angle would have been great during the heyday of the Mid-Atlantic. One of a small....SMALL handful of current wrestlers that I believe could do so....
