What can you all tell me about Piper's arrival in MACW? When did he debut, and who was involved in first push (major angle or feud)?

Roddy Piper joined MACW/Jim Crockett Promotions in 1980. I'm not sure of the exact date, but he wasn't here long before he won the T.V. title on Nov. 1, 1980 in a tournament (tournament was held due to Masked Superstar forfeiting title in quest to go after the NWA World tag titles, IIRC). Piper beat Paul Jones to win the title in Richmond, Va.
He had some matches with Johnny Weaver that I know of after he won the title. Then his first big feud was with Ric Flair, winning the U.S. title on Jan. 27, 1981, in Raleigh, N.C.

the weaver fued lasted a few months, but briefly. greensboro went like this:
11/27/80: piper vs weaver
12/28/80: piper vs flair
1/11/81: piper vs weaver
then he beat flair for the us title on 1/27 in raleigh. that was the end of the weaver feud, i do believe. he then battled flair and then wahoo the following months. i was thinking it was the end of august when he arrived, but not sure.

Yeah, I can't remember for sure when he arrived. I was trying to hunt it down. But he wasn't here long before they put the TV strap on him.
Yeah, Weaver got a shot at him in Culpeper, too, on Nov. 22, 1980. That was such a cool bout. Piper came out and asked Sandy Scott if he could play the bagpipes. So Piper plays and the fans boo, obviously. Then Weaver gets on the mic and pronounces something along the lines of Piper wearing a skirt, gets the crowd all going.
Piper eventually got DQed and my brother, my crazy brother, jumped up on the apron to help get Weaver down from hanging upside down as Piper kicked the daylights out of him. LOL.

Piper...another former Days Inn Resident in Charlotte. Stayed 2 doors down from me. He was WILD outside of the ring as well!...lol!

I'll always wonder what MACW/JCP would have been like today had Crockett Jr. not let Rhodes influence him so much.......and waste so much money and talent. I know this has been discussed a gazillion times but my resentment towards Rhodes/Runnels has grown over the years. Crockett Jr. should have done everything within his power to keep the NWA promoters and regions/areas together.
