From the mid 1970s until the mid 1980s, did Mid Atlantic Wrestling ever recognize WWWF/WWF Champion? For example, did Bob Caudle, David Crockett, or Rich Landrum ever say "This weekend in Toronto WWWF Champion Billy Graham battled..." or "Last week in St Louis WWF Champion Bob Backlund tackled..."
Just curious. I know that the WWF did not acknowledge guys like Race, Funk as former NWA World Champions when they came to the promotion...

on 3/22/81, bob backlund defended the WWWF title against bobby duncum in greensboro. i never recall backlund being on tv, but during the local promos, backlund was called the "WWWF world champion" by duncum. and do believe rich landrum called him that while going down the matches on the show.
they had to recognize race when he fought backlund in new york, didn't they? i thought backlund defended the WWWF tite that night while race's NWA title was not up. not sure though.

That's interesting. I did not know about the Duncam/Backlund match.
I know that in November 1978, Backlund did defend the WWWF title against Ken Patera in Greensboro and won by DQ.
Also, in Raleigh back in April 1979, Rick Steamboat defeated then AWA World Champion Nick Bockwinkel by DQ. I think that they met again in Winston-Salem, later that year, but I do not know the official decision of that match.
Race did have matches vs. Superstar Billy Graham, in 1978, as well as Bob Backlund, in 1978 and 1980, where both titles (NWA and WWWF) were on the line. In fact, I think that Race wrestled on Championship Wrestling or All Star Wrestling against a jobber and Vince McMahon hyped up the NWA World Champion, Harley Race. Race wrestled on WWWF TV as he would face Tony Garea later that month at Madison Square Garden.

Backlund was WWWF/WWF champion from February 1978 - December 1983 so he did not wrestle in MACW in 1979 (just that one match vs. Patera in 1978 in MACW). However, Bob did wrestle on one occasion for MACW prior to his run in the WWWF...
October 20th, 1975 Greenville, SC Mike DuBois beat Bob Backlund

Growing up in the NYC metro area, I made lots of trips to Madison Square Garden and the Westchester County Center, but I never saw Mid Atlantic Wrestling until 1983 or 1984 when we were able to pick it up on a UHF channel. As a 9 or 10 year old, now I was blessed with World Class, WWF, Georgia, Southwest Championship Wrestling, and Mid-Atlantic!
