Where in Shelby, NC did Dick Slater defeat Greg Valentine for the US Title? YMCA? I do not know of any facility in Shelby that could have accomodated MACW at that time.
Also, was Valentine cheered in this match? He left MACW in 1984 for the WWF so he was dropping the belt to Slater. Both Slater and Valentine were big time heels in 1983 with Valentine being booed out of the Greensboro Coliseum some three weeks earlier during his dog collar match with Piper.

I don't know about the specific match you ask about, but at the time, MACW's Shelby home was the City Park Recreation Center, the only place I've ever known wrestling to be in Cleveland County besides maybe one of the high schools. I know there was footage on the Flair dvd from Shelby. It was of a TV taping leading up to Starrcade with Flair chasing Slater and Orton all over the building with a baseball bat.

I think that Slater won the US title from Valentine about 1 1/2 weeks before Christmas 1983 in Shelby, NC. I guess he won it at the City Park Recreation Center that was featured on the Flair DVD with the Nature Boy chasing Dick Slater and Bob Orton from the ringside area with a baseball bat.
I would have thought that since Valentine was leaving the promotion that Slater would be booed more.

the last volume of WRESTLING TITLE HISTORIES lists 12/14/83 in shelby, so you are right.

It was definitely Shelby. I have the match on tape somewhere, not sure what tape it's on where Piper got involved and Slater won when Valentine gave him a belly-to-back suplex and Slater got his shoulder up, but Valentine didn't.

That was such a bizzare time in JCP... right after Starrcade and before 1984. I remember Valentine and Wahoo teaming up in Hampton and it just didnt fly...at least not here. Valentine I guess was working out the rest of his contract before heading north, but this definately seemed like a transition period.

Thing is is that Valentine didn't go north until at least February or March because he was in the semifinals of the NWA TV title tournament the following year, losing to ... Slater, again.

I think that Valentine left MACW in late January 1984. Check out these match results..
Allentown, PA - Agricultural Hall - January 24, 1984 Greg Valentine defeated Frankie Williams Greg Valentine defeated Rudy Diamond
Allentown, PA - Agricultural Hall - February 14, 1984 Greg Valentine defeated Frankie Williams Greg Valentine defeated Jose Luis Rivera
Allentown, PA - Agricultural Hall - March 6, 1984 Greg Valentine defeated SD Jones Greg Valentine defeated Tony Garea
Maybe, Valentine just did TV tapings in January, February, and March for McMahon while he finished up his commitments to JCP in the winter of 1984 in Virginia and the Carolinas. I do not think that he started house shows with the WWF until March 1984.

That's probably correct. This was common practice by the WWF at the time, to bring guys in weeks in advance for TV before they went on the road. They tapes Tv weeks in advance then, so it was easy to do.
I know Sgt. Slaughter did the same thing, taping WWF TV while still finishing out the "Final Confrontation" followup matches with Crockett.

I could see that being the case. I just know he lost to Dick Slater in the semifinals of the televised TV title tournament on Mid-Atlantic Wrestling. The match was probably done in February, considering Mark Youngblood beat, I believe, The Assassin #2 in the other semifinal, leading to Youngblood's win over Slater in the finals in either late February or early March.
