I'm not agianst the talent getting paid well. Ater all that is what you would hope for. I think that paying well is good from what you draw. We were paid on the house count. If we all worked hard the shows would draw more that equates to us getting paid for production. Like all regualr businesssituation. The company should share the profits so to speak.
I agree with small guarantees but if you are saddled with large guaranteed contracts and little to no production that is a formula for disaster. Look at the other sports. Basketball, baseball, football they are all beginning to feel the pinch. Stuck with enormous guarantees and not all are doing well. I'm not against getting paid but if you get something for nothing you really have little insentive to continue to put forth the best effort. How many times have we heard of the top talent getting a slight injury and not being able to go out for a series of matches. Hell ! I've heardthat one wrestler once refusd to go in the ring because his shoe lases didn't match. That would never have happened before. Back in my time if you didn't wrestle you didn't get paid. The money coming in would stop but the bills didn't. There is of course some draw backs to that. We all suffer from those days we should have rested but couldn't. That's part of the sport. I recently heard from a freind that said, " It's the profeession we chose, it comes with it" referring to the pain and injury factor.
To answer your question, Yes,I would say it is one contributing factor. One of many.
