That's awesome! I was hoping they'd do something like this, since I didn't get to see JCP during the heyday of the Horsemen.

well, it does say complete matches. that is one thing that will entice me to give up money. now....it says nothing about music being dubbed over, or commentary. you guys get it and tell me how much of it is overdubbed and/or chopped up and then i will decide.

Well - all those WWE wrestler-retrospective DVD's usually have a 'documentary' up to 2 hours long, and then up to 3 discs worth of special features, which usually feature complete matches, interviews and angles. They are generally great value for money....my problem is that the match listings are pretty uninspired, especially considering the extensive tape libraries at WWE's disposal. I understand the need for them to include an overview, and the most famous matches that person/team has been involved in, but they usually feature 2 or 3 interesting segments from early in the career (i.e the early 70's Florida stuff on the Dusty DVD, or that early Georgia stuff on the Roadwarriors' set), but then the rest is just the usual PPV / supercard /commercial tape matches we've all seen a million times before. The new Hogan DVD is a perfect example - there are 4 or 5 items that are pretty interesting (AWA title match, some NBC stuff etc - footage that hasn't been commercially released before) but the rest of it is literally the Wrestlemania & PPV main events in chronological order that everyone has seen a million times. This devalues their current Wrestlemania boxsets - why don't they leave Wrestlemania matches exclusive to those - it would give them a special aura? Plus - to make it worse....and I SWEAR I am not joking....25% of the footage on this disc was on the first Hulk Still Rules DVD they put out 3 years ago. There were other Orndorff matches besides the Toronto one (the cage match from NBC, example); there are other Flair matches besides Bash At The Beach '94 (Halloween Havoc that same year, for example); there are other Andre matches besides Shea Stadium and Wrestlemania III (from both periods) - why don't they use these other matches?? If there was no duplication they could keep both titles in print, and make more money. And why no Georgia footage. It would just be more interesting to me if they used more old TV / SNME / Coliseum Video matches that are less often seen, most never getting a commercial release, and some never even broadcast more that once. And you could have a whole disc alone on the NWO era, with matches from that period. That would be a lot more interesting to me, as I retained little from that period on videotape (because there was so much crazy wrestling on each week, and I thought it would last forever) and again its stuff that is just less often seen....there are more DVD's full of Hogan footage in that library than there will ever be a market for....so its not like they risk putting all their footage out in the public domain (and I get the vibe that their worried about this, which is why rarer footage is never used).... So I guess my point is....if this Horseman disc is just filled with old Starrcade and Bash matches (which most have seen a million times before, and a lot have already been put on WWE DVD's) then I would seriously think twice about buying it....and it says a lot that WWE may have managed to sour me against a DVD that will likely feature the 4 Horseman logo on the front cover....

I don't think it is so much the Public Domain thing, as it is that they aren't really targeting the internet or tape trading community. These DVD's are sold in Walmarts, K Marts, Targets and the like. What the WWE is hoping for is to get the fan who watched this as a kid and sees the disks when looking for the newest DVD set of Family Guy or Entourage. Thats why they put allot of the more well known, more visable matches like Starcade's and Bashes. They don't fell like Joe Schmoe wants to see some rare Flair match, he will want to see Flair vs Rhodes or The Andersons vs. The Rock N Roll Express, or Tully vs. Magnum.
Take my cousin Tommy for example. I have all kinds of stuff laying around, but Tommy hardly has anything, and he was so excited to get the Cage Macth DVD a few years ago. I had all that stuff already and couldn;t understand why he was so excited about it. After talking with him it dawned on me, he doesn't have this tuff, and it has been years since he had seen it. Same with the Flair DVD and The Dusty DVD. While I may not jump at The Horsemen one when it comes out, I am sure if he sees it he will.

i see exactly what you are saying kimmel. it's like with music...all the stations play the same crap over and over and so many people (god knows why) still like to hear songs like "dancing queen", "heart of glass"....all that kind of overplayed shoved down our throat stuff for the past 30 years. i know it has been overplayed and shoved down our throats because i hear them now for 30 years, while most people, that still want to hear them, HAVE NO IDEA that ABBA and Blondie ever had any other songs. check the lists....ABBA had 14 songs in the BILLBOARD TOP 40, yet all you hear is Dancing Queen and you are very lucky to hear Take a Chance ON ME. other than those two songs, you don't hear it. compared to wrestling DVD distribution....:
RADIO AIRPLAY matches in comparison Dancing Queen = flair vs rhodes Take a Chance on ME = flair vs steamboat, sting, race, barry windham Fernando = flair vs luger, a von erich, wahoo SOS = flair vs terry funk, tsuruta Waterloo = flair vs piper, jack brisco
............then there are ABBA songs and flair bouts that I want to hear and see: If It Wasn't For The Nights =flair vs victor jovica, jack veneno, buddy rogers, carlos colon, terry gordy Vous le Vous = flair vs gino hernandez, buddy landell, tully blanchard supertrooper = flair vs slater, ron fuller, tommy rich
translated, the songs i want to hear by ABAB will not be played on the radio jsut as the flairmatches i want to be released on DVD are jut as likley to be released on DVD...next to never. and as the songs get fewer airplay incomparison to the matches, the less likely you will see those matchups on DVD. but take the folks that actually want to hear Dancing Queen, they STILL (god know why) want to see yet a zillion more flair vs dusty mathes....pathetic. and that is who the DVD people will cater to.

Ahhh...with this DVD upcoming, that explains why Flair was permitted to make reference to The Four Horsemen on RAW last Monday.

I'm already turned off by the title. It's not Ric Flair AND The Four Horsemen, and never was until the magic of the group was lost. Flair was a MEMBER of the group, but not necessarily the most important person or part. For today's fans, that would be like putting out a DVD with the title Triple H and Degeneration X.
Strike one, Vince.

my initial thoughts exactly Bradshaw...it's the same with everything else. every idiot in the word has renamed everything. examples: phil collins and genesis paul mccartney and the beatles ect....and the most ghastly overdone renaming of anything... michael jordan and the bulls.....
that crap irritates me. as you said, vince has already messed that one up by title alone.

Same with the Flair DVD and The Dusty DVD. While I may not jump at The Horsemen one when it comes out, I am sure if he sees it he will. I wasnt suggesting WWE should put out DVDs loaded with matches of no mainstream value....I meant - for example - if your cousin Timmy had that Wrestlemania boxset, hes probably not gonna get the new Hogan DVD....(likewise if he had the previous Hogan DVD)....as there is almost nothing of worth to the mainstream wrestling fan on the new Hogan set that wasnt on the Wrestlemania box. Im talking about them putting out the same matches on different DVDs....the Hogan example is a bit like them doing a new Flair DVD that has a whole disc of footage that was on the original....these disks are popular and sell big and with a little planning they could greatly increase the opportunity for repeat business. Unless they think everyone is stupid. And they could be correct on that.... Yates....I love the radio analogy. My take is that A LOT of peoples musical sensibilities extend no further than what is on the radio (or in short: what is on the radio is, for most, the understanding of what music is)....so from a Clearchannel ~ program director perspective, if they keep everything simple then its easier to control peoples sensibilities and appeal to their "intellect" in getting the results they want....in terms of the advertising, news items and records they want to sell. Clearchannel dont want to sell their ability to create an impression over to some artist that actually makes good music and might provoke you to think. Sorry about the lack of apostrophes....keyboard is royally faqd....

disappointed??? obviously you never heard all the songs that made them so great..... it's the same as people who profess to not like KISS when all they ever hear is Rock n Roll All Night..please don't get me started preaching about that stupid song.... !!!! PS. i am likely the biggest village people fan you ever met as well....see the above arguements and attach them to YMCA as well !! please don't get me starting preaching again...

Michael - really excellent points... I enjoy your insights. Bobby - Did you just compare Ric Flair matches to ABBA? That's great... LOL . I agree with that and in a similar vein, when people find out that my favorite band is Kiss, they say, "oh man, Rock and Roll All Nite, that's great!," and I just want to cry because hearing that song for the 11 millionth time makes me sick. Kiss has about 50 other songs that people should hear before that. So I understand the analogy... HOLY FRICKIN CRAP!!! DID YOU JUST POST THE SAME DAMN THING I WAS POSTING AT THE SAME TIME??? Nice to see another member of the KISS ARMY!
