Wrestling stars busted in Hanging Rock By Kirsten Stanley/The Ironton Tribune
Monday, July 3, 2006 10:10 AM CDT
HANGING ROCK — Two wrestling superstars from Extreme Championship Wrestling and World Wrestling Entertainment may be tough in the ring, but they didn’t have enough muscle to escape drug charges after being stopped Sunday night by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Robert Alex Szatowski, aka WWE and ECW champion Rob Van Dam, and Terry Michael Brunk, aka Sabu, also a former ECW champion, were pulled over on U.S. 52, near Patrick Street in Hanging Rock at about 10:15 p.m. The two were apparently driving from their performances at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena earlier in the evening.
According to the OSHP, Szatowski was initially stopped for speeding. When troopers approached his vehicle, they smelled marijuana and performed a search.
Troopers found the wrestler in possession of 18 grams of marijuana and five Vicodin, prescription pain pills. Brunk was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and also had nine pills that were not immediately identifiable, but were known to be controlled substances, according to the OSHP. Both were cited and posted bond at the scene.
Szatowski, of Battle Creek, Mich., has had a long, successful career with both the WWE and ECW. In addition to being the current champion of both, he has been intercontinental champion six times, hardcore champion four times and has been a part of several championship tag team duos.
He is scheduled to wrestle tonight on WWE Raw and is also wrestling Tuesday night to retain his WWE and ECW titles during the “Extreme Rules Match” on the Sci-Fi channel.
Brunk, who lists his hometown as Bombay, India, on the WWE Web site, has also had a successful career with the ECW, earning world heavyweight championship titles two times and tag team championship honors three times.
Both Brunk and Szatowski are scheduled to appear at 10 a.m. Thursday in Ironton Municipal Court. Both wrestlers won their matches last night in Huntington, W.Va. Van Dam defeated the Big Show and Sabu defeated Justin Credible

Oh dear! This puts Vince in an interesting position. By the wording of the wellness testing policy, this could mean instant dismissal of both men, especially prudent as this will be the first opportunity Vince has had to publically show he's serious about the policy and company drug issues, but on the other hand Sabu & RVD are two top guys at the moment, and all they're apparently guilty of is being wrestlers with pain pills (albeit partly illegal), so it would likely be seen as a double-standard for him to penalise wrestlers that **probably** don't have drugs problems. In terms of testing marijuana the policy isn't hard on that IIRC, the main problem being just that an arrest was made....

Looks like the fallout has already begun. RVD lost the WWE title to Edge tonight on RAW. They changed the match to a triple threat "title" match at the start of the show. They said RVD would be defending the ECW title tomorrow night so my money is on whoever he faces to win the belt from him. These guys have the world by the tail and don't even realize it. All within three days RVD will be left without any titles, possibly a job, etc. with the new No Tolerance Policy. Who knows?

It's just plain stupidity on both their parts. I'm not going to get into the drug issue. As far as I'm concerned if someone wants to do drugs, that's they're perogative. I used to use myself, so I'm not going to be the pot calling the kettle black on this one. But when you've got so much going for you and you screw it all up in such a stupid way, man. I'd hate to see RVD and Sabu lose their jobs over this, but if this is a no tolerance policy, then they should be released. What a shame.

I should jump in here with a reminder that MANY people -- even wrestlers -- have prescriptions for pain pills (ie. vicodin,) so let's not jump to conclusions on that one. Say whatever you want about the other, but I also know that there are many folks in wrestling lockerrooms everywhere that are on things much worse than pot. To me, it's a non-issue and had it not made the local press (as several other incidents in the past have not,) there would've been no reaction from WWE. RVD has long been a supprter of NORML and similar groups for the legalization of marijuana. This is not something that caught WWE by surprise. To me, it's a lot more embarassing to watch Raw and see some of the things Vince and Triple H get away with simply because they own the company. To me, there's no place for penis pumps, discussion of "dicks" and intimated oral and anal sex on a wrestling show.

I meant the pot, and having it in the car. Just do it at home, is what I was saying. As for the last bit, I agree as well on that. Wrestling didn't need that kind of crap back in the day, and still doesn't need it, IMO. And sure, RVD is a known pothead, and yeah, it probably should be legalized. It's no more worse for you than alcohol. But it is still illegal, and irresponsible to have it in your vehicle.

Who can forget when Jim Duggan and Iron Sheik got pulled over and caught with pot.....in the middle of a feud with each other.
Vince's reaction should be interesting. If he fires both of them, they'll be in TNA the next week.

fact.the trooper smelled pot during the stop....i put 2 and 2 together. Fact: The Trooper claimed to smell pot. How many times have you been pulled over? I have had police officers pull me over and claim that I was swerving or that I looked drunk, or smelled of alchol when I had none. They can claim anything they want to search something. You want to deal in facts? FACT: Not charged with a DUI means not driving while high.

the pot calling the kettle black An appropriate metaphor.... I have no problem with RVD, or anyone, smoking pot - but like someone already said here, its irresponsible to be doing it whilst driving - your speed of response is slurred, and you could easily cause an accident. Plus - just from common sense don't go driving around on major roads and through towns etc whilst smoking an illegal drug that anyone can easily identify by smell from a 10 - 15 metre radius....

All valid points if they had been high when they were driving. But they weren't because no one was charged with a DUI
