hey all,
I just recently won a copy of Starrcade '85 off of Ebay and watched it. This tape showed Dusty Rhodes pinning Ric Flair and winning the world heavyweight title and a locker room celebration following the match. However, the internet sites I have looked at do not credit this as one of Rhodes' three world title reigns and they all say that Rhodes actually won that match by DQ and Flair retained the NWA world title. Does anyone know what is correct? Did Dusty win that match by DQ and Flair retain the title? Any light that anyone can shed on this is appreciated.
Thanks

hey GS. good to see you. i was at the greensboro coliseum that night. this was a match where dusty "won" the NWA title. then, the decision was changed after most of the fans had left the building, knowing no different until they saw the tv later on. i saw the same finish in greensboro on 11/6/82 between dusty and flair. this is one of the major reasons i don't care dusty.

Too bad its one of the main reasons JCP was killed

For years Flair and Dusty have talked about wrestling 60 and 90 mintue draws for the NWA title. I'd said most of these occured in Flordia and Georgia from 1981 to 1984. What I've never understood is way they did not have a match like this for Starcades 84 and 85. Well in 85 Dusty was "injuried." It just seems stupid to run a good match at a house show and a screw finish at a PPV.

I agree, classic Dusty finish. Definitely a satisfying finish for women, children, and the casual fan.

I have always heard that Dusty was going to win the title that night, but the plan was switched after the results were leaked out in advance and ran in a couple of publications -- i.e., Charlotte Observer and Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The same goes for the Mid-Atlantic title match. Sam Houston was to have won the title at Starrcade, from what I've heard, but the result was switched. Sam got the belt six weeks later.

Even with the dusty finish, I think Starrcade 85 is one of the best (well 2nd best behind '83)

I remember my dad telling me that somebody he worked had gone to Greensboro and that Dusty had won the NWA Title. I was so happy when I learned the 1st ref (Tommy Young I think) had called a DQ and Flair was still Champion. How about the 84 Starrcade when Joe Frazier stopped the match due to Dusty's excessive bleeding. Another infamous Dusty finish.

I remember them talking about this two nights later on TBS and the controversy, etc. I was sooooooooooo glad that Flair kept the strap. When Dusty got it eight months later anyway, well, it was two weeks of pure .... until Flair got the belt back.

The '86 title reign of Dusty's was pointless imo.

It was. IMO, the '86 title reign was done for two reasons:
1) So Dusty could take the title that he didn't put on himself at Starrcade eight months earlier. 2) To get the title off Flair, even if for a short time, because he had held it for almost 2 1/2 years at that point since beating Kerry Von Erich, which was a long reign for Flair when you consider it. I think it was his longest reign ever, actually.

I agree with that. If you are going to book, don't book yourself over. At least it was a short run.
