For me it would be a tie between the Missouri Mauler and Rip Hawk for this time period.

Pre 74? Would have to be either Rip Hawk or Missiouri Mauler.
Valentine was a great heel to be sure, but he didn't spend anywhere near the length of time in the area pre 74 that Hawk and the Mauler had. In terms of sheer hatred from the fans, I think Rip Hawk was way ahead of anyone in that department.

I would have to say Rip Hawk. Johnny Valentine was second, he didn't have a "High Profile" like Rip. Hawk was the Rick Flair of that time period!

I agree with the RIP HAWK and THE MISSOURI MAULER listing.
These guys were at the top with JCP for most of the 1960's.
And that's a long time...
I'd also have to mention HOMER O'DELL, although he only wrestled on special occasions, but did that guy ever have heat!

Rip Hawk by a mile! That piledriver of his was awsome. You knew when he applied it that no one was going to kick-out from that!

Greatbologuy is right about Homer O'Dell. He got alot of heat! I know an elderly lady that I live near threw a cup of coke on him at one of the matches at the Lexington YMCA during the late 60's. When I talk about wrestling with her she still get's upset when you mention him even to this day! Talk about heat!

Greatbologuy is right about Homer O'Dell.Homer O'Dell drew more heat than any manager I ever saw in Jim Crockett Promotions. He and George Becker were perfect against each other. They wrestled each other in the first cage match I ever saw.Back then it was called a fence match because, well a fence building company would bring out a roll of wire and stretch it around the ring. Not as elaborate as you see today but it got the job done.
There was a sellout crowd in the old Winston-Salem Coliseum that night to see George Becker win two straight falls from Homer O'Dell.

JV fan here, but Larry Hamilton gets my vote today. Yesterday it might of been Rip Hawk VR

How do you differentiate between those two? Both of em meaner than hell, both good talkers and both true legends.

A much closer call than the "leader of the pack" thread.
Since the time frame is PRIOR to 1974.... I would go with 1. Rip Hawk 2. Homer O'Dell 3. Missouri Mauler
Just one man's opinion....

I began watching wrestling at the age of 10 in 1972. My first main event was at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. It was between Andre The Giant and Number 1 Paul Jones against Ric Flair and Johnny Valentine. From what I remember about Johnny Valentine I would have to say that he was the top heel of that time period. BTW this is my first post on the MACW message board. Hello everybody!!

Can anyone else out there confirm this? Thanks!

I was born and raised and still live in Biscoe. We've had a lot of people stabbed here over the years, but I never heard that Homer O'Dell was one of them. I could be wrong though.
