For the second consecutive time, I ordered a UFC PPV. The bad thing is that all of the shows are on Saturday nights, and I have to go to work at 10:30pm. So I have to record them and watch them the next day.
Joe Lazon vs Jens Pulver - it was funny seeing Lazon pull off the big upset, after all of the hype Pulver had in making his UFC return. I liked Pulver's post-fight interview. It was classy, and he didn't make excuses. He was honest and said he didn't take the fight lightly.
Rashad Evans vs Jason Lambert - Decent fight. Rashad looked strong and it was nice to see him actually finish someone. The guy isn't one of my favorites because of his lay and pray style, but no doubt he is very skilled.
Melvin Guilard vs Gabe Rudiger - Decent fight, and nice body shot to put Rudiger away.
Mike Swick vs David Louisea - this turned out to be a dissapointment. Louiseau was tentative. The 3rd round made it an ok fight. Despite winning, this fight made it clear that Swick is not ready for Rich Franklin yet.
Tyson Griffon vs David Lee - fine, short fight.
Matt Hughes vs BJ Penn - Of all songs for BJ to use as his entrance music, he picks Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy", which I can't stand. Entrance music aside, I was rooting for Penn to pull of the upset. The first two rounds were great, with Penn clearly winning and being very impressive in avoiding takedowns. Unfortunately for Penn, he gassed, and then Hughes did what he does best - picked him apart. This was by far the fight of the night. I'd like to see them for a third time, and hopefully Penn will improve on his cardio by then.
Georges St. Pierre's comments to Matt, saying he wasn't impressed, was very uncharacteristic, but it turned out to be a mis-understanding. I don't blame Matt for being upset, but I do believe that it was a mis-understanding. Dave Meltzer said that someone told Pierre that Matt had just dissed him in his promo. So the comment was meant in response to that, and when he saw Matt was upset and realized he had never said anything about him, he was apologetic.
Mario Neto vs Eddie Sanchez - nothing much until a great KO finish.
Overall, Hughes-Penn made this a good one. I might have to spring for next months show also, to see Rich Franklin vs Anderson Silva.
